Postgraduate Financial Assistance

The University provides financial assistance to a number of higher degree candidates who are Malaysian citizens. A limited number of graduate research assistantships are available to international students registered at UMT. The types and terms of awards available are outllined below.

Graduate Research Assistantship Scheme (GRA)

    • This scheme is offered to both Malaysian and International full-time students who are registered under Structure A or B

    • The stipend awarded will come from the research (IRPA) grant of the supervisor.

    • The length of sponsorship depends on the student's period of study and on the amount of fund available from the respective research (IRPA) grant.

    • Students who receive the award will be paid an allowance of either RM1,250.00 or RM1,500.00 per month upon the recommendation of the supervisor.

 

Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme (PASCA)

    • To encourage research in the areas of Science and Technology, Malaysian Government through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (MOSTI) provides special grant under the Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme for Malaysian students. The fields identified by MOSTI include advanced manufacturing, advanced materials, biotechnology, micro-electronics, aeronautics, environmental sciences, environmental health, ICT, and energy.

      • This scheme is offered only to Malaysian full-time students who are registered under Structure A programme.

      • Successful applicants shall receive a monthly stipend of RM1300 for master's programme and RM1500 for Ph.D programme. The scholarship shall also include appropriate tuition fee due to the University.

      • Maximum period of sponsorship is two years for Master's programme and three years for Doctorate programme

    • Students who receive either of the above-mentioned award are not allowed to receive any other financial support. In addition to conducting their respective research, students are also required to assist in teaching, tutorial and demonstration that are assigned by the University. The workload for such assignments shall not exceed six hours per week.
    • Applicants for the above mentioned awards must forward the appropriate application forms to the Graduate School.

 

National Science Fellowship (NSF)

    • To inculcate research in the areas of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (MOSTI) also provide a highly prestigious scholarship to Malaysians called the National Science Fellowship (NSF). Application form for this award could be obtained directly from the NSF Secretariat at MOSTI or be obtained from the Graduate School office. Applicants should submit completed application form to the NSF Secretariat through the Graduate School.

      • Successful applicants shall receive a monthly allowance of RM1560.00 for Master's programme and RM 2300.00 for Doctorate programme.

      • Maximum period of sponsorship is two years for Master's programme and three years for Doctorate programme.

      • The scholarship shall also include appropriate tuition fee due to the University. Successful applicants are also required to assist in teaching, tutorials, and demonstrations, besides conducting the research. The workload assigned shall not exceed six hours per week.
