Kuala Terengganu—A total of 500 undergraduate students from all public universities participated in the English Language Carnival 2019 (ELCA 2019) held at UMT and UniSZA from 26-27 September.

The carnival was jointly organized by UMT, UniSZA, and Higher Education Department.

The carnival aimed to provide the students with opportunities to use English outside the classrooms and motivate them to enhance their English competency.

Higher Education Director-General Datuk Ir. Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir said that the activities planned for the participants, who were mostly at B1 level within the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), emphasized student-centred learning and communicative approach.

“In addition to allowing the students to show their English speaking competency through activities and competitions, ELCA 2019 has also drawn interests from several industry players,” she said.

“The event is part of our effort to motivate the students to improve their English and build their confidence to use the language,” she said.

She added that ELCA 2019 was a proactive step taken by Higher Education Department to create a conducive ecosystem that provides opportunities for public university students to enhance their English competency.

UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar said that the carnival could help increase the students’ confidence and readiness to sit for the Malaysian University English Test (MUET).
