As Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) continues to celebrate its Silver Jubilee, this edition of the UMT Newsletter invites us to remember where we came from, why we exist, and where we are headed.

Beginning as an institution rooted in marine and aquatic sciences, UMT has evolved into a niche university whose expertise resonates nationally and globally. Our progress in international rankings is an encouraging indicator of this journey. Yet, our true measure of success lies beyond numbers, but in the knowledge we create, the talent we nurture, the communities we empower, and the solutions we deliver to society.

The stories here illustrate that impact. From securing international funding for mangrove restoration to advancing microplastics research, UMT demonstrates that knowledge must move beyond the laboratory and lecture hall and be translated into meaningful solutions for people, the environment, and the planet.

Our engagement with coastal fish farmers demonstrates how research, innovation, and knowledge transfer can build economic resilience while safeguarding marine resources. Likewise, our collaboration with industry shows how universities can bridge the gap between academic learning and work competencies.

Our Silver Jubilee also reminds us that a university is defined by its people. Researchers, academics, professional and support staff, students, alumni and strategic partners are the collective force behind every achievement.

As UMT enters its next chapter, the challenge is to build an institution more impactful, sustainable, connected, and future-ready.

After 25 years, we have a proud legacy. But our greatest responsibility is to turn that legacy into a stronger future.
