A student of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) was one of the athletes who has won the gold medal for the country at the Asean University Games (AUG) taking place at the Airlangga Convention Centre.
Judo athlete Afiq Danish Zapri, who celebrated his birthday a day prior to the final, received his best present when he won in the men under 90 kilogramme category.
In the final match, he defeated Mayza Tyas Nugraha, an athlete from the host country who has won the bronze medal at the Asean Judo Championship 2024.
The student from the Maritime Management programme said the victory was the most meaningful gift of his life.
“This is the most meaningful gift of my life, winning the gold medal at AUG 2024 arena.
“Thank you to my father, mother, and younger siblings for the support extended. Without them, it would have been impossible for me to stand on the podium today.”
Afiq, who hails from Bachok, Kelantan, expected the final match to last a short while but that was not the case.
“I expected to defeat my opponent much sooner, but he was strong and experienced, and this was our first meeting”.
Meanwhile, UMT top management congratulated Afiq Danish Zapri for making the country proud by winning the gold medal at the Asean University Game (AUG) 2024.
