Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), through the Centre for Knowledge Transfer, Industry and Community Network (PPIJIM), continues to take strides in strengthening relationships between the community and industry through the implementation of various knowledge transfer and industry networking programmes in line with the UMT Strategic Plan 2023–2027. This effort is driven by close collaboration between the university, government, community, industry, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and other stakeholders from time to time.
UMT’s knowledge transfer programmes focus on four main thrusts, namely economic generation, community empowerment, improvement of quality of life, and social well-being. This approach is aligned with the five (5) Key Focus Areas of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), particularly in implementing new approaches to knowledge transfer and sharing programmes that bring research and innovation outcomes closer to the people for the benefit of the community as a whole.
Meanwhile, UMT’s industry networking is strengthened through programmes that emphasise aspects of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), as well as the development of industry-ready national talent. These initiatives also support the achievement of the ten (10) Shifts of the Malaysian Higher Education Blueprint, particularly through high-impact industry collaboration.
To ensure the success of the national agenda, PPIJIM continues to move forward through the organisation and direct involvement in the implementation of both short-term and long-term knowledge transfer and industry networking programmes on an ongoing basis.
SEJATI MADANI@KPT PROGRAMME
Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) continues to demonstrate strong commitment in strengthening the socio-economic development of communities when it was appointed by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) as the Terengganu State Coordinator for 2024–2025 for the implementation of the Sejati MADANI@MOHE Programme (Community Economic Development), an initiative of the Ministry of Higher Education in collaboration with the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU), Prime Minister’s Department (PMD).
This programme is a new approach to bringing the research and innovation outcomes of higher education institutions (HEIs) closer to the people through direct knowledge transfer to the community, with the aim of improving the well-being and income of the local population.
UMT plays an important role as a community mentor through various high-impact projects focusing on the fields of marine science, aquaculture, food technology, urban farming, and social entrepreneurship. The university also provides expertise and academic resources to offer guidance, technological training, and continuous monitoring of selected community projects.
Through this inclusive and community-driven approach, UMT aims to increase participants’ income, reduce operating costs, and produce competitive local products. In addition, the programme creates opportunities for youth, women, fishermen, and vulnerable groups to participate in a more sustainable economic ecosystem.
