Ucapan Naib Canselor Sempena MoU di antara UMT & Heriot-Watt University pada 28hb November 2015

Ladies and gentlemen,

1.             Researchers from Heriot-Watt University and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu have been collaborating since 2012, brought together by their common research interest in the field of marine science, especially the investigation of the ecological functions of marine resources that could provide sustainable livelihood for island and peripheral communities.

2.             The geographical distance between the two universities is not a barrier in this age of telecommunication and brain storming sessions between the researchers were conducted through Skype. From these sessions, it was ascertained that the main areas of research interest that can be mutually beneficial are marine science, fisheries, and aquaculture, as well as island and peripheral communities.

3.             Their aim to carry the concept of sustainable management of marine resources is timely and needed by most of the developing nations in this region. This is evident when the activities and contributions under this synergetic collaboration have even reached Myanmar.

4.             I was informed that researchers from Heriot-Watt and UMT jointly visited their Myanmar counterparts last year, in order to further pursue potential research projects together. A collaboration that can spawn further collaborations is indeed a successful enterprise.

ISSUES AND CHALLANGES

Ladies and gentlemen,

5.             As we are all aware, many challenges lie ahead of us. Climate change, ocean acidification and global warming are among the phenomena which will impact ecological services of biological resources in the marine environment, and it will eventually affect livelihood of the community.

6.             Although we are aware of the potential threats, the degree of impact has yet to be determined. We need data before we can confidently face the challenges ahead. But happily, I can see that the friendships and trust forged in this collaboration will help contribute to the body of knowledge and findings needed.

7.             Signing this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today, will open a great gateway for marine scientists from Malaysia and the United Kingdom, and will allow researchers from UMT and Heriot-Watt University to work even closer, and to contribute to sustainable use of marine resources.

8.             Obviously, I am excited about our working together, and I am eagerly looking forward to the outcomes of this MoU.

Thank you very much.
