UMT HOLDS 16TH CONVOCATION CEREMONY (2018)

Share This Article :KUALA NERUS—UMT 16th Convocation Ceremony was held in a ceremonial and convivial manner on 11-13 November 2018.
This year’s ceremony saw 2,970 graduates receiving awards, which included 39 graduates for doctoral degree, 156 master’s degree, 2,647 bachelor’s degree and 128 diploma. The total number of graduates this year increased 10% from 2017.
UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Haji Mokhtar in her speech said that this year’s convocation also acknowledged recipients of Honorary Doctor of Science, Honorary Doctor of Management and Emeritus Professor awards.
Also honoured at the ceremony were recipients of Royal Education Award, Chancellor Gold Medal Award, Pro Chancellor Award, Chairman of Board of Directors Award and Vice Chancellor Award.
“UMT is proud of the 8% increase in the number of students graduated with first-class honours this year and that has proven UMT always takes notes of the development of effective teaching and learning,” said Professor Nor Aieni.
This year’s convocation also witnessed the success of UMT in producing the first batch of graduates from two new programmes which were Master of Counselling and Bachelor of Science in Agrotechnology (Crop Science).
According to Professor Nor Aieni, the rate of graduate employability rose to 73.2% in 2017, compared to 70.1% in 2016, representing an increase of 3.1%. The rate for 2017 exceeded the 70% target set and was the highest rate achieved so far.
“This improvement shows that our graduates and academic programmes are of good quality and they are able to compete in the job market.
In addition, UMT Alumni database shows a total of 30,067 graduates have been produced by UMT since 1997, and they are playing the role of UMT ambassador all over the world,” added Professor Nor Aieni.
In her speech, Professor Nor Aieni also said that to produce holistic graduates, UMT students are not only required to excel in academic and research but are also exposed to leadership programmes, entrepreneurship, and volunteer programmes that can increase their quality and achievement so as to be competitive.
Also honoured were seven graduates of different ability and parents of a deceased student (who died of anaemia) whom UMT had invited to accept the conferment of posthumous degree.
UMT Pro Chancellor Tan Sri Samsudin Osman conferred the awards to the graduates on behalf of UMT Chancellor Sultanah Nur Zahirah.
