COVID-19: UMT PRIORITIZES STUDENTS’ WELFARE AND SAFETY

Kuala Nerus, 19 March – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is doing whatever it takes to accommodate the welfare and safety of its students in an effort to ensure that these important assets are fine and safe in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic.
A special meeting chaired by UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Associate Professor Dr Hafiz Zakariya was held today to discuss the necessary plans of actions.
According to Dr Hafiz, several action plans were decided that would be carried out for the welfare and
“UMT through Sultan Mahmud Islamic Centre is allocating RM70,000 for students who have been forced to stay put on campus or nearby. The application for the aid must be done through MyEhsan online application,” he said.
He added that UMT also agreed to reimburse the students for the tickets that they purchased to go home.
“UMT management was aware of the plight of the students who had to purchase the tickets home using their own money yesterday, but we could not get the approval from the university. So now UMT will reimburse the money,” he said.
“As a proactive measure, we will ensure that five cafeterias at the residential colleges are open throughout the government order so that students will have enough food supply. Food delivery service is also allowed to avoid the students from going out in groups,” he said.
“In addition, the Act of Kindness (AOK) team that has been in operation a few years ago giving away free food to needy students is also participating in distributing necessary items to the students,” he said.
He further said that UMT will set up a COVID-19 information centre that will provide the latest updates on initiatives and action plans throughout the enforcement of government order.
Students are advised to observe every instruction from the authority and take preventive measures as suggested by the Ministry of Health.
Meanwhile, UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar reminded students to be patient, remain calm, and not leaving the campus for their safety and health.
