In QS Asia University Rankings Report 2021, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has for the first time been ranked 195th among Asia’s top 200 universities. Up 48 places from last year, this has been UMT's best achievement since its establishment.
UMT Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato' Dr. Nor Aieni binti Haji Mokhtar expressed her delight in the rise and emphasized that UMT will continue to implement the strategies that have been formulated to achieve future targets.
"Continuous empowerment of research, teaching, internationalization, and university visibility will continue to be UMT’s main focus, not only for the ratings and ranking purposes but also for the fulfilment of stakeholders’ needs as stipulated in the university's strategic plan" she said.
QS Asia University Rankings evaluates universities in Asia through 11 indicators, including reputation, research, and internationalization. UMT improved its performance across 10 of the 11 indicators.
This achievement is a testament that UMT is duly recognized by international academics as well as industries, Professor Nor Aieni said, as the QS rating involves surveys from both parties.
Attainment of the 195th position in Asia is in line with the target set out in the UMT’s Strategic Plan 2018-2022 (PSUMT) for the year 2020, she said.
PSUMT is the main reference that contains a comprehensive strategy to be adopted by UMT to continue its excellence as a university that focuses on marine science and aquatic resources.
According to Professor Nor Aieni, UMT's inclusion into Asia's top 200 universities is likely to attract more international students and increase international collaborations with overseas academicians and industries.
In addition, this achievement highlights the visibility of UMT on the world map, she said.
Professor Nor Aieni said that the remarkable results are a form of recognition of the high-quality work culture and commitment of UMT staff and students, who would go out of their way to ensure successful execution of the strategic plans.
"UMT believes that there must be a balance between achieving international rankings and achieving the main goal of the university’s establishment, which is dissemination and creation of knowledge" she said.
