KUALA NERUS – Instilling integrity values and good governance practices among students needs to be continuously strengthened to produce the next generation of ethical, credible, and capable national leaders who can drive national development.

UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof. Dr. Mohd Izani Mohd Zain stated that the university is committed to producing students who are holistic, balanced, and competitive to meet the country’s future needs.

“Instilling integrity values and good governance practices is among the key elements in developing holistic students. We aim not only to produce knowledgeable graduates but also young leaders with strong character, ethical, and are capable of contributing significantly to the country’s development,” he said.

He added that in an increasingly challenging leadership landscape, students are required not only to excel academically but also to possess strong personal qualities, moral values, and high administrative capabilities.

Prof. Izani made the remark during the 2025/2026 Student Representative Council (MPP) Organizational Strengthening Workshop held recently in Janda Baik, Pahang.

According to him, student leadership, particularly within the Student Representative Council, serves as an important early training ground to develop administrative capabilities, manage entrusted responsibilities, and foster a sense of duty toward society.

“Exposure through structured leadership development programmes, such as workshops and training, is believed to produce more mature students who are prepared to face real-world challenges.”

Meanwhile, the President of the Student Representative Council for the 2025/2026 session, Wan Darwisy Khazin Wan Ahmad Rosddy, described the empowerment programmes as capable of shaping excellent leadership qualities and personal character among students.

“The organizing of student empowerment programmes is much needed and provides exposure to student leaders on organizational management, transparent and responsible decision-making, as well as strengthening understanding of leadership ethics.”

Emphasizing good governance practices also forms the foundation for principles of transparency and accountability among university students, which is believed to instil noble values into the public and private sectors as well as community leadership.
