KUALA NERUS, 9 Disember 2025 — Universiti Malaysia Terengganu’s (UMT) continuous efforts to strengthen scholarship and freshwater biodiversity research have once again received recognition when a book titled Fishes of Kenyir, published by Penerbit UMT, was announced as the winner of the Best Scholarly Book Award in Science and Technology during yesterday’s event organised by the Malaysian Scholarly Publishing Council (MAPIM) in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education (MAPIM–KPT).

The scholarly publication was authored by two UMT researchers, Dr Mohamad Aqmal Mohd Naser and Professor Dr Amirrudin Ahmad, from the Institute of Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainable Development (IBTPL).

The award is a testament to UMT’s standing as a leading university in biodiversity research, natural ecosystem conservation, and the advancement of knowledge grounded in marine science and aquatic resources.

Fishes of Kenyir is a significant work that compiles comprehensive documentation of fish species in Tasik Kenyir, one of Malaysia’s freshwater ecosystems with the richest diversity of animal and plant species. As such, it serves as a key reference for researchers, students, natural resource managers, and government agencies.

Dr Mohamad Aqmal, who has also led several major research grants including the Lubuk Yu Research Grant (2024–2025), has demonstrated strong commitment through extensive fieldwork, scientific analysis, and high-impact conservation efforts.

Meanwhile, co-author Prof. Dr Amirrudin, who is recognised as an expert in freshwater fish ecology and biology by the Malaysia Biodiversity Information System (MyBIS) and serving as Regional Co-Chair of the IUCN-SSC/Wetlands International Freshwater Fish Specialist Group, further strengthened the scholarly depth of the publication.

The research conducted at Tasik Kenyir represents a vital effort in sustaining natural ecosystems while highlighting UMT’s expertise in leading freshwater fish research and protecting endangered species in Malaysia.

The MAPIM–KPT evaluation panel conferred the award based on the book’s research rigour, data accuracy, impact on the advancement of zoological knowledge, and its role in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 15).

Among the key strengths of Fishes of Kenyir is its presentation of up-to-date scientific information on endangered and critically endangered fish species, creating the urgent need for conservation measures to be taken.

The publication also reflects UMT’s dedication to preserving ecosystems encompassing lakes, rivers, and water catchment areas, in line with national efforts to strengthen biodiversity conservation.

Dr Mohamad Aqmal described the award as recognition for researchers involved in aquatic resource conservation and as motivation to further intensify scientific research.

“As the lead author, I am deeply grateful and proud that this research and publication have been recognised at the highest level. It motivates us to continue producing scholarly work, exploring new knowledge, and contributing more to the conservation of the nation’s natural resources. I also extend my appreciation to all fellow researchers, institutions, and parties involved directly or indirectly in making this book a success,” he said.

As a leading institution in marine and aquatic resources, UMT remains committed to strengthening scientific knowledge, spearheading national biodiversity conservation efforts, and ensuring that ecological heritage is preserved for future generations.
