Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) recently celebrated its Silver Jubilee in June, a milestone that carried deeper significance by demonstrating how far the university, established in 2001, has developed from an institution focused on marine-related disciplines into a niche university with distinctive expertise that is gaining increasing recognition on the global stage.

The celebration was not merely a commemoration of its 25 years of establishment, but also a platform to showcase the journey of a university that continues to grow, strengthen its expertise, expand its recognition and build its reputation nationally and internationally.

Among UMT’s achievements strengthening was its rise in the QS World University Rankings 2026 to the 801–850 band among the world’s best universities, compared with 1001–1200 previously, as well as its 160th position in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026.

More significantly, UMT’s strength in its core disciplines also received international recognition, with Marine and Freshwater Biology ranked first in Malaysia, 19th in Asia, and 96th globally by U.S. News & World Report.

These achievements did not come by chance, but were the result of the continued commitment of the UMT community to strengthening academic excellence, research, innovation and strategic collaborative networks.

Research strength through Higher Education Centres of Excellence (HICoE) has also been a key pillar in strengthening UMT’s position as a reference centre in its strategic areas of expertise, particularly marine science, biodiversity, aquatic resources, climate change and environmental sustainability.

The milestone was commemorated with the UMT 25th Anniversary Carnival, held from June 25 to 28, which brought together university members, school students, the community and the public through a wide range of activities, including a forum, traditional sports, aerobics, an inter-school innovation competition, exhibitions, sales booths, and cultural performances.

This spirit of innovation was also reflected in the UMT 25th Anniversary Carnival, with the 2026 Inter-School Innovation Competition providing a platform for the younger generation to showcase creative ideas and solutions based on science, technology and sustainability.

The participation of school students in the programme reflected UMT’s commitment not only to generating knowledge, but also to building an ecosystem that can inspire young people to develop an interest in STEM, innovation, as well as ocean- and environment-related fields.

At the same time, programmes such as Discover @ UMT and academic exhibitions provided the public with opportunities to learn more about UMT’s areas of expertise, research and contributions, thereby strengthening the university’s relationship with the community.

Community well-being and development also received attention through a health collaboration with the Terengganu State Health Department, which included health screenings, awareness campaigns and blood donation activities.

In the context of future campus development, UMT’s journey is also progressing in tandem with its transformation towards a Smart Campus, leveraging digital technology, innovation and data-driven approaches to improve management efficiency, the learning experience and the quality of services provided to the university community.

More importantly, this digital transformation is progressing alongside the sustainability agenda, in line with UMT’s identity as a university that places the ocean, environment and aquatic resources among its key strengths.

The sustainability agenda is now embedded not only in research, but also in education, governance and campus operations, including efforts to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste, expand green areas and promote low-carbon practices.

The launch of electric vehicles, including EV buses, during the UMT 25th anniversary celebration also symbolised the university’s commitment to developing a greener campus that is prepared to meet the demands of the future.

The four-day celebration culminated in Malam Simfoni Samudera, which featured cultural performances and the creativity of the UMT community, followed by the carnival closing ceremony and a lucky draw to conclude the overall programme.

From spiritual activities through the special prayer and Forum Perdana to community, sports and health activities, as well as innovation, academic, cultural and sustainability programmes, the UMT 25th Anniversary Carnival ultimately offered a microcosm of the university’s own identity — an institution that grows through knowledge, is built on expertise and continues to move with the changing times.

After 25 years, UMT has more than just a history to remember. It has achievements to celebrate, expertise to strengthen and a greater responsibility to shoulder.

The Silver Jubilee is not merely an opportunity to look back on the journey, but also to open a new chapter towards becoming a more prestigious, smart, sustainable and competitive university on the world stage.
