KUALA NERUS, 27 February – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is committed to improving the welfare of its students and producing holistic graduates who can compete in the global employment market.

UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof. Dr. Mohd Izani Mohd Zain said student well-being is one of the university’s top priorities to ensure a conducive and quality learning experience.

He said UMT has drafted various initiatives to ensure the students will receive comprehensive support, including aids, improved campus facilities, and implementation of holistic self-development programmes.

“We are aware students are the country’s assets, so we need to pay attention to their welfare and character development. Therefore, UMT will continue to enhance various welfare initiatives, such as financial aids, free-food scheme, and health and counselling support,” said Prof. Izani during his special speech at UMT’s Sulaiman Auditorium.

He also emphasized the importance of developing character and soft skills to produce graduates who are not only academically excellent and highly skilled but also possess strong leadership.

”Student development should not only focus on academic but need to include character development and leadership. UMT always ensures students have the opportunity to participate in training sessions, entrepreneurship programmes, and industry linkage events to increase their employability,” he added.

Among the measures taken by the university is strengthening the connection with the industry through training programmes and academic collaborations that enable students to gain the experience of the real world before entering employment.

In addition, initiatives related to entrepreneurship are also introduced to students to encourage them to start their own businesses with help from industry experts.

“UMT wants to ensure every graduate will not only obtain employment after graduation but be able to create their own employment. This is in line with the government’s aspiration to produce competitive and innovative workforce,” he said.

With continuous commitment from UMT, Prof. Izani is confident the university will continue to be the leader in developing holistic students who will contribute to the country’s development in the long run.
