KUALA NERUS, 26 October 2025 — Her Royal Highness Sultanah Nur Zahirah, Sultanah of Terengganu and Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), graciously officiated the 23rd UMT Convocation Ceremony 2025 held at Dewan Sultan Mizan, UMT.

The momentous ceremony celebrated the success of 2,539 graduates who have completed their studies across various fields of knowledge. Of this number, 254 were postgraduate graduates, while 2,285 were undergraduates.

A total of 425 graduates received First Class Honours degrees, reflecting the continued academic excellence of Malaysia’s leading marine-focused university, which remains committed to producing knowledgeable, ethical, and highly competitive graduates.

The 23rd UMT Convocation also marked a milestone as it celebrated the first cohort of 18 graduates from the Bachelor of Applied Science (Nanophysics) with Honours programme. This achievement demonstrates UMT’s commitment to expanding the fields of science and technology in line with current needs and the growth of research- and innovation-based industries.

The prestigious ceremony also featured the presentation of various academic excellence awards in recognition of the graduates’ perseverance and dedication throughout their studies.

The Royal Education Award (Excellent Achievement Medal) was presented to Mohamad Izuwansah Ishak, Bachelor of Applied Science (Fisheries) with Honours graduate from the Faculty of Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences (FSPA) for the Bumiputera category, and Alina A/P Pannirselvam, Bachelor of Science (Nautical Science and Maritime Transportation) with Honours graduate from the Faculty of Maritime Studies (FPM) for the non-Bumiputera category.

The Chancellor’s Gold Medal Award was conferred on Logenthiran A/L Velaventhan, Bachelor of Tourism Management with Honours graduate from the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Development (FPEPS).

Meanwhile, the Pro-Chancellor’s Award was presented to two Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) recipients — Muhamad Syaizwadi Shaifudin from the Faculty of Ocean Engineering Technology (Science category) and Ramizatunnisah Jais from the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Development (Social Science category).

In his address, UMT Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri Ibrahim emphasised that the university continues to strengthen its academic and research excellence in alignment with the nation’s direction to empower the food, fisheries, and maritime technology sectors.

“UMT now offers 36 undergraduate academic programmes, and beginning October 2025, three new programmes have been introduced under the Faculty of Ocean Engineering Technology (FTKK), while one programme has been rebranded under FSMA. Two additional new programmes are planned for the October 2026 intake to further expand educational opportunities in high-impact fields,” he said.

Interestingly, UMT also introduced a Third Language Policy to enhance graduates’ employability at the international level. Among the languages offered are Arabic, German, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish, and French.

In line with the digital era, UMT continues to advance technologically by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching and learning. Beginning October 2025, the Basic AI Course will be made a core university course for all students, aligning with the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE)’s aspiration to nurture future-ready talent driven by innovation and technology.

“However, I wish to remind graduates that the adoption of AI must be grounded in clear ethical principles and responsible guidelines to prevent misuse. With the right combination of knowledge, ethics, and technology, our graduates will be well-equipped to face future technological challenges with confidence,” he said.
