Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has achieved a significant milestone in advancing quantitative finance education by becoming the first university in Malaysia to establish a formal partnership with the CQF Institute, a globally recognized professional body dedicated to quantitative finance and financial engineering.
The collaboration was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UMT and Fitch Learning Limited, the organization behind the internationally renowned Certificate in Quantitative Finance (CQF) programme. The partnership marks an important step in strengthening UMT’s global engagement and expanding opportunities for students and academics in the rapidly evolving field of quantitative finance.
The initiative was spearheaded by Associate Professor Dr. Che Mohd Imran Che Taib, Coordinator of the UMT–CQF Institute Partnership, Head of the Stochastic and Financial Analysis (SOFIA) Research Interest Group, and a Financial Mathematics academic at the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics (FSKM).
According to Dr. Che Mohd Imran, the partnership represents a strategic effort to bridge academia and the global quantitative finance community.
“Quantitative Finance is one of the most interdisciplinary and rapidly growing fields in today’s financial landscape, bringing together mathematics, statistics, data science, artificial intelligence, and finance. This partnership provides an invaluable opportunity for our students and academics to engage with international experts and gain exposure to the latest developments shaping the future of the global financial industry.”
Through this partnership, UMT students and academics will have access to a wide range of professional resources offered by the CQF Institute, including educational content, webinars, industry talks, conferences, career insights, and networking opportunities with practitioners and experts from around the world. The collaboration will also facilitate knowledge-sharing initiatives, professional development activities, and industry engagement programmes designed to enhance awareness and understanding of quantitative finance and related disciplines.
As financial markets become increasingly data-driven and technology-intensive, the demand for professionals with expertise in quantitative modelling, risk analytics, machine learning, financial engineering, and computational finance continues to grow. The partnership positions UMT to play a more active role in preparing graduates for these emerging opportunities while strengthening its academic profile in Financial Mathematics and Quantitative Finance.
The significance of this collaboration extends beyond UMT. As the first Malaysian university to establish a partnership with the CQF Institute, UMT is helping to strengthen connections between Malaysia’s academic community and the global quantitative finance ecosystem. The partnership reflects the growing recognition of the role of mathematical sciences in addressing complex challenges in modern finance and highlights the potential of Malaysian institutions to contribute to internationally relevant fields of expertise.
The collaboration is also expected to strengthen UMT’s position as a leading centre for Financial Mathematics and Quantitative Finance education in Malaysia, particularly within the East Coast region. By fostering closer engagement with international professional networks, UMT aims to equip its students with the advanced analytical, computational, and problem-solving capabilities required to excel in the increasingly complex global financial landscape.
This landmark partnership underscores UMT’s commitment to academic excellence, internationalization, and the development of future-ready talent capable of contributing to the global knowledge economy.
