Kuala Nerus, 3 September—A total of 2,327 new students have been offered to further their studies at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) for 2019/2020 academic session. Of the total, 681 are male, and 1663 are female.

Meanwhile, 17 international students including from Yamen, Indonesia, Nigeria, Syria, Bangladesh, Thailand, Algeria and India have been offered to enrol in undergraduate programmes at UMT.

UMT student intake for this year was quite special as it also included 6 students with disability, 4 students from the indigenous group, and 359 students from B40 families. In total, 369 students were accepted into UMT through special entrance.

“Praise Be to Allah, UMT has been given the trust to accept and manage 6 students with disability this year. This proves that the Ministry of Education is more confident with the disabled-friendly facilities available at UMT,” said Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar.

This year, UMT is also offering two new academic programmes, Bachelor of Science (Marine Geoscience) and Bachelor of Computer Science (Mobile Computing).

UMT, through Sultan Mahmud Islamic Centre, continued with the practice of offering Caravanserai service to the less well-off parents who accompanied their sons and daughters, as one of the charitable initiatives.

Offered for the second year, the Caravanserai@UMT Mosque service provided free accommodation to lessen the financial burden of some parents. A total of 102 people including non-Muslims used the service during the registration period from 1-3 September.

Through Al-Ikhlas Financial Aid, 600 students from needy families including B40 received RM300 each, with the allocation coming from zakat and student welfare fund totalling RM180,000.

This effort reflected a high level of caring by UMT about the welfare of the needy students, whom the university would help so they could continue their studies more comfortably, said Professor Nor Aieni.
