Water supply disruption in the Kuala Nerus area since 2 August has made life difficult for staff of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) who live in the district.

The disruption has also affected the daily routines of students on campus as their only source of water during the disruption is in the parking lot by the hostel.

UMT’s top management has taken an effort to solve the water supply disruption to help staff and students who have been affected.

Deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Assoc. Prof. Dr Hafiz Zakariya, said that UMT through its Development and Asset Office (PPH) has taken the best approach in managing the crisis by collaborating with external agencies.

“The Fire and Rescue Department has been supplying 40,000 liter of clean water daily via two tank lorries,” he said.

“This assistance means a lot to UMT staff as well as students on campus as it helps them to complete their daily routines.

“UMT has also been given access to obtain the water using its vehicles in case of continued disruption,” Dr Hafiz said.

He also said that various agencies have come forward to offer assistance, including IMAN CARE and the Office of Kuala Nerus Parliament.

“UMT would like to thank all the agencies involved in managing the water crisis on its campus to ensure sufficient water supply, and they include the National Water Service Commission (SPAN), Terengganu Water Utility Company (SATU), Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA), IMAN CARE, the Office of Kuala Nerus Parliament,” Dr Hafiz said.

Meanwhile, Director of UMT Residential College, Ts. Dr Nik Aziz Nik Ali, said that the college will do its best to ensure enough water supply for use by the students.

“Currently there are 630 students staying on campus. To ensure enough water supply for them, the college will form a task force to handle the matter,” Dr Nik Aziz said.

Wan Nor Fatihan Wan Mohd Fauzi, Couselling student, expressed her gratefulness for the water assistance.

“Thank you UMT for making the effort to obtain water supply for us,” she said. “At first, we were worried about the water supply disruption, but now we can just take the water from the static tanks nearby.”

A statement by SATU said that the crisis will end 11 August after works on repairing the pipes at the bottom of Terengganu River are completed.
