Science and technology have played a primary role in people’s lives since the 21st century. Their advancement has been rapid and the cost of using them has become more affordable as a result of their commercialisation.

Today’s technological development is also supported by a balanced ecosystem that had not been available in the old days. Developed countries are competing with one another to become the pioneer in the latest technology that will change people’s lives.

In the research and innovation sector, rapid technological development has enabled the creation of scientific equipment that can measure, prove, and confirm scientific theories. The level of support provided by laboratories will evolve as time progresses.

Hence, the community involved with laboratory equipment, or technologists, need to keep abreast of the technological advancement so that their capability will evolve as time progresses. This is important to meet the needs of scientists, researchers, and the industry.

Among the main elements that need to be known by individuals active in the use of laboratory equipment are instrumentation technology, laboratory quality & accreditation, scientific techniques, safety elements and others.

Enhancement programmes need to be offered to this group to enable them to keep in stride with the latest technology so that they will remain competent.

“The technological advancement has led to the birth of various scientific equipment that is evolving and advancing as time progresses. Therefore, laboratory staff need to be aware of the current technological changes so that they are able to fulfil the needs of scientists and the industries,” said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasrizal Shaari during the Opening Ceremony of National Laboratory Innovation Seminar (NALIS 2022) held in Kuala Terengganu recently.

Dr. Hasrizal, who is also the Director of the Centre of Research and Field Services, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), said the seminar (NALIS 2022) was a platform for those involved in the field of science and technology to improve their innovation.

“The seminar becomes an interactive platform for researchers and inventors to display their innovation and creativity for the public, especially the scientists and industry players.”

He said the talent enhancement programme may improve their services and motivate them to become the best as well as enable them to excel at a higher level, with excellent innovative products.

Achievements in science and technology require competent laboratory group who can carry out research and development activities (R&D) to come up with innovative products and subsequently contribute to the country and take it to another level.
