Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has postponed the physical admission of new and existing students of 2020/2021 academic session that was originally scheduled to take place from 4-8 October.

The decision is in line with the recommendation made by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) on 2 October that all institutions of higher learning defer the physical or face-to-face registration of new and existing students.

A total of 2480 new students have registered online for 2020/2021 session, representing 94 percent of the total 2628 places offered.

More than 2000 students participated in the virtual Orientation Week from 27-29 September and made pledges during the New Intake Pledge Ceremony at the end of the programme through Webex application in the online presence of the deans and principal officers.

UMT originally planned for the students to be present on campus in stages starting from 4-8 October, before the decision for the postponement was made following the spike in COVID-10 positive cases and advice from the ministry.

As at 2 pm on 4 October, the first day of the physical admission, twelve students have checked into the residential college, with two of them deciding to remain. The current number of students staying at the residential colleges are 623, these being STEM foundation students, diploma students, international students, and members of the student council.

Teaching and learning for the current semester will be conducted online for all academic programmes and will begin on 11 October.

UMT has partnered with YTL Foundation to offer free data plan to all new students for the purpose of online teaching and learning. Students can find out more about this plan by visiting UMT Official Facebook page.

More than 300 students have been identified who lack access to engage in online learning. UMT will be providing proper assistance to this target group.

UMT has allocated more than RM0.667 million to improve the welfare of students from B40 families and asnaf groups. They will be receiving the contributions quite soon.

UMT appreciates the effort by MOHE to negotiate with the respective agencies regarding the rescheduling of flights and bus journeys for students affected by the postponement. Students can obtain more information by contacting UMT Student Representative Council members. UMT will ensure that the cafeterias and cooperatives are open to serve students currently staying on campus.

UMT is aware of the emotional health of the students and thus provides a counselling hotline. Students can call 019-9530132 to talk to Puan Hainany Idayu.

Latest information can be obtained by contacting UMT COVID-19 hotline at 09-6685059/4286/4296.
