Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has agreed to collaborate with a national and an international industry player to further strengthen the fisheries industry.

The university, through its Institute of Tropical Aquaculture and Fisheries (AKUATROP), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Eko Akua ParQ Sdn. Bhd.  (EAP) and the South China Sea Fisheries Research Institute (SCSFRI), Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences, in Shah Alam recently in conjuncion with the 2023 AgTech International Expo.

AKUATROP Director Prof. Dr. Mhd Ikhwanuddin Abdullah said the strategic collaboration enables the university to expand its research activities related to a rearing of high quality parent white shrimps and a closed shrimp culture system.

”The MOU becomes the best medium for information and data exchanging with SCSFRI. EAP has offered a research site to AKUATROP for the R&D activities related to the project. This benefits both parties and is also cost-saving.

”The closed shrimp culture system being developed will meet the needs in the fisheries sector, with full AI-based control system that manages daily operations and data collection.

”Meanwhile, UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar expressed his appreciation on the formalized partnerships.

”Congratulations to AKUATROP for taking the initiative to form a collaboration with EAP and SCSFRI for the white shrimp project.

“UMT will support this type of initiative as part of its effort to help ensure food security from the nations’ fisheries sector.”

The event was also attended by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security of Malaysia, Chan Foong Hin.
