In Islam, besides Aidil Fitri, Aidil Adha is the biggest holiday observed by Muslims all around the world. In Islamic calendar, it is celebrated on 10-13 Zulhijjah each year.

Aidil Adha is a special celebration for Muslims to honour the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim AS to sacrifice his son Prophet Ismail as an act of obedience to Allah SWT’s command.

It is filled with Takbir on the eve of 10 Zulhijjah, prayer in the morning, and ritual slaughter of animals on 10, 11, 12 and day time 13 Zulhijjah, known as Day of Tasyrik.

But do you know how the animals are ritually slaughtered?

To help the public understand the process and procedure, Sultan Mahmud Islamic Centre has held a briefing open to UMT staff especially those participating in Ibadah Qurban (the ritual sacrifice of animals) this year.

According to Musa Muhamad, Manager of Kuala Terengganu Abattoir Complex, Department of Veterinary Services, the slaughtering of the animals must be done appropriately so as to lessen the stress experienced by them.

“Several procedures need to be adhered to, such as putting the animals on the ground, using appropriate ropes, making sure the slaughter area is clean, and using sharp knife,” he said.

“The slaughtering process must be performed quickly. It must be done in a humane manner and must be compliant with religious requirements,” he said.

“The waste of the animals needs to be managed well according to rules of the local enforcement agency, and liquid waste needs to be buried and managed appropriately”.

Meanwhile, UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar took the opportunity to wish all Muslims Happy Aidil Adha which will be celebrated on 11 August.
