Kota Tinggi, 28 May – Befitting its “University for Society” slogan, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) once again worked with a community through the Semarak Masyarakat Kota Tinggi programme, sharing its expertise in relevant fields, with hopes of providing an impact and a leap in every aspect to the society and industry players involved.

Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Higher Education Minister, in his speech said UMT’s initiative in organizing impactful programmes involving the communities in Kota Tinggi especially the community in Sedili provides an opportunity for the communities to improve their economic and social status and their development.

He added that the programme conducted by UMT consisted of a knowledge transfer programme, a research project exhibition, and a social responsibility programme in collaboration with the community.

He said such programmes will be continued in the future for the sake of the development, progress, and transformation of the society.

“In an effort to turn the society to become innovative and competitive, the ministry is focusing on the concept of Madani. It covers the aspect of technology exploration, creating new fields where the focus is on solving future problems and increasing the country’s and people’s potentials.”

He added that the Madani concept has been translated into programmes that aim to solve current issues, especially those concerning the B40, fisherman, single mother, student groups, for the sake of the country’s social and economic sustainability.

“It is also the aspiration of the Ministry of Higher Education to turn universities into sustainable institutions that can serve the society. Therefore, the ministry is always in support of the efforts by universities to make the country prosperous and its people well.

“Universities’ involvements provide added value in that universities can explore and understand issues communities face, and communities can gain new knowledge. Through this participation, the society can feel the presence of universities and their staff and consider them part of the society.”

Meanwhile, UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said UMT always emphasizes three main roles of a university, which are generation of new knowledge through impactful research, dissemination of new knowledge especially through quality academic programmes to students, and transfer of research-based knowledge for the purpose of solving various problems related to science, technology, and socio-economic status in the country.

According to Mazlan, UMT always makes the best use of its expertise to provide positive impacts to communities, industries, and the country.

One of UMT’s initiatives to help with community development is the transfer of knowledge and technology produced by its researchers through the university’s internal grant called UMT Translational Research Grant Scheme.

The Semarak Masyarakat Kota Tinggi programme was filled with knowledge sharing sessions by UMT researchers, with sessions on creating soap from used cooking oil, stingless bee farming, oyster mushroom cultivation, fish-based downstream products, mud crab farming, fisheries technology and equipment project, society empowerment for sustainable harvesting of coastal plants (Gelam trees) project, Artemia project, and Black Soldier project involving local fishermen, single mothers, youths, and the B40 group.

The success of UMT stingless bee projects, one of UMT-community knowledge transfer initiatives, in Batu Pahat, Johor, and Besut, Terengganu, involving single mothers has helped each of them generate a monthly income of around RM1000.

Also taking place in the programme was the exchange of a Letter of Intent between the Faculty of Fisheries and Food Science and K Bees Sdn. Bhd regarding collaboration on stingless bee farming technology. UMT’s decision to involve the industry is for ensuring the programme will benefit the Kota Tinggi community.

In addition, several students representing the UMT Anak Johor Secretariat, or SOHOR, also met and greeted the Sedili community. The club has been active in ggggggggg all over Johor, and Sedili was the selected location for its 11th exploration series.

Various interesting and educational activities were organized by 40 UMT students involving foster families at Kg. Sedili Besar, and these included educational, cultural, and social activities.

The two-pronged programme has not only helped the local community gain new knowledge, but has also allowed UMT students to improve their generic skills when they became part of the programme committee.
