PM visits Terengganu, breaks fast at UMT

Kuala Nerus – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stopped by Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) while he was in the state for an official visit.

He was on campus for the fast-breaking ceremony organized by UMT at Sultan Mizan Hall.

His arrival was welcomed by UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar, state leaders, and department heads.

He said UMT was honoured to have the Prime Minister on campus for the ceremony.

“On behalf of UMT, I would like to express our appreciation and thanks to the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his willingness to come to UMT and break fast together with the Terengganu people and UMT students,” he said.

UMT has undergone various stages of revolution as it pushes itself towards high-level achievements, Prof. Mazlan said.

“UMT is 21 years old this year, and that means the university has moved from emerging phase to matured phase, which will be more challenging.”

UMT’s focus is marine science and aquatic resources. Types of research carried out at the university are guided by the university’s mission and also its slogan of “Ocean of Discovery for Global Sustainability,” Prof Mazlan said.

During the ceremony, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also witnessed the presenting of funds by several government agencies and corporate bodies to UMT to support the university’s efforts in conducting research activities and welfare programmes.

Among the agencies were Malayan Banking Berhad (Maybank)(RM180,000.00), Bank Rakyat (RM 30,000.00), Etiqa Family Takaful Berhad (RM 182,900.00), Terengganu State Islamic Affairs and Malay Customs (MAIDAM) (RM266,411.41), Rashid Hussein Bank (RHB)(RM10,000.00), AmBank Group Berhad (AMBANK) (RM45,900.00), Kinrara Housing Berhad (RM70,000.00), and Takaful Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (RM30,000.00).

In addition, UMT also received fund in the form of Public University Income Sustainability Research Grant, through Zakat, Wakaf, and Endowment (Akept KPT – UMT) totalling RM100,000.

Also in attendance were Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dato’ Seri. Mohd Zuki Ali, State Secretary Datuk Tengku Farok Hussin Tengku Abdul Jalil, and the local community.
