Kuala Nerus, 30 December 2020-Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) received a visit today from Senator Datuk Dr Haji Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), in conjunction with the launching of the educational fund “Inspirasiku” and a book titled “Ulul Albab: Menyingkap Keajaiban Islam” (The People of Intellect: Revisiting the Wonder of Islam).

Datuk Dr Haji Zulkifli said that “Inspirasiku” that started 2016 is aimed at helping students from the B40 families pay for the expenses before entering universities or schools.

He added that “Inspirasiku” is the latest initiative by YaPEIM in an effort to help people in the B40 category.

“YaPEIM targets a total donation of RM40 million, which will help 40,000 students,” he said. “The aid will be up to RM500 for secondary school students and RM1000 for university students.

“YaPEIM has allocated RM1 million from its trust fund as a seed fund to show its commitment towards addressing the plight of students from the B40 group.”

According to Datuk Dr Haji Zulkifli, YaPEIM’s educational fund has helped 52,745 families (99,469 children) to date, with an allocation of RM6.85 million. As for university students, 12,743 have been helped, with an allocation totalling RM6.37 million.  

“Alhamdulillah, today YaPEIM in cooperation with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) will be giving “Inspirasiku” contribution to 680 students, with the total contribution of RM340,000,” he said. “The contribution is in the form of cash that is deposited into the university’s account as payment for the study fees and other necessities.”

UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Haji Mokhtar welcomed the Minister’s visit to UMT and expressed her appreciation and thanks to YaPEIM for the willingness to establish a close relationship with UMT to address the welfare of the students.

She added that the Graduate Employability programme by the Faculty of Economy and Social Development was in collaboration with YaPEIM’s cooperative.

“The programme trained 47 UMT students at Pusat Gadaian Ar-Rahnu where they were exposed to the system of Islamic pawnbroking,” she said. “After their training, 41 students were offered to work as assistant operations officer at Ar-Rahnu.

“The giving of “Inspirasiku” educational fund today by YaPEIM is part of the government’s effort to help with the welfare of the society.”

She also thanked the Minister for the latest initiative by YaPEIM under the Socioeconomic and Charity Development Thrust to benefit almost 40,000 university and school students in the country.

“We feel honoured to have be selected as the recipient of the educational fund “Inspirasiku” amounting to RM340,000, to be distributed among 680 selected students,” she said. “Each student will receive RM500.”

The Minister also launched a book titled “Ulul Albab: Menyingkap Keajaiban Islam.” The book contains nine scientific articles on the wonder of Islam, written by 23 university researchers in Malaysia. Readers will know about significant discoveries especially in the fields of food technology, health, genetic, and animal farming.

Also present during the programme held at Studio Al Quran, Sultan Mahmud Islamic Centre, were Dato’ Haji Mohd Redza Shah Abdul Wahid, Chairman of YaPEIM Board of Trustees, UMT Principal Officers and Senior Officers, representatives from Religious Affairs Department, and UMT staff who followed the event on Webex.  

The Minister also visited the Cultural Heritage Digital Gallery: Connecting the Past for the Future to see the Holy Quran manuscript displayed using augmented reality technique. The gallery is managed by the Islamic Centre in collaboration with Ericsson Malaysia as part of the effort to preserve Terengganu sultanate heritage.
