KUALA NERUS, 18 April 2022: Professor Dato` Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar has been reappointed as Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Vice Chancellor. The one-year appointment took effect from 18 April 2022.

Professor Mazlan was first appointed as UMT Vice Chancellor 2 August 2021 by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini Ahmad. He was previously UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation.

Professor Mazlan’s field of expertise is fisheries science, which is in line with UMT’s research niche of marine science and aquatic resources.

Professor Mazlan has had several notable achievements. He has helped UMT’s Institute of Tropical Aquaculture and Fisheries obtain the Higher Institution of Excellence (HICoE) recognition under the research and innovation thrust. He has led a special project funded by the Long-Term Research Grant Scheme (LRGS). The project titled Ocean Climate Change: Potential Risk, Impact, and Adaptation Towards Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Services in Malaysia also involved researchers from several other public universities. He has also initiated commercialisation of intellectual properties at UMT as a means for the university to generate income.

Professor Mazlan has also actively contributed at the international scene. He is a member of several international organizations, including Ichthyological Society of Japan, Marine Biology Association of United Kingdom, Asean Fisheries Society, and Taiwan Oceanography Society.

Professor Mazlan said that he intends to continue with the agenda of strengthening UMT’s niche of marine science and positioning UMT as an excellent focussed university.

“I thank Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini for giving me the trust to continue leading UMT,” he said.

Professor Mazlan is the sixth UMT Vice Chancellor. The first Vice Chancellor was appointed in 2001 when UMT was still known as University College of Science and Technology (KUSTEM).
