A UMT sailing team won third place in the 19th Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2023 (RLIR). The only representative from the Malaysian higher education institutions gave its best effort, but its score was one point less than that of the TLDM team that finished second overall.

The team employed a different strategy by having female students taking part in the race. The plan worked, as the team, which was called Ocean Girl UMT, managed to defeat other teams mostly represented by male sailors in the Sports Boat category.

Team leader Naila Nor Hasan said they were still able to participate competitively in the tournament although the training period was brief.

“We knew we could give our best and make the university proud even though our training lasted less than a month,” she said. “We knew we were the only representative from higher education institutions, so we tried our best.”

“Alhamdulillah, Praise Be to Allah, the sailing strategies and skills we learned enabled us to finish third. The achievement made us proud.”

Another UMT team also participated in RLIR 2023. The all-male team called UMT 1 was led by Ku Anas Ku Zamil, trainer, and also former national sailor.

The team had earlier garnered third place during the International Yacht Race in South Korea November last year. It was also the sole representative from Malaysian higher education institutions to take part in the event.

UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar congratulated Ocean Girl UMT for the remarkable achievement that has helped increase the university’s visibility at the international arena.

The four-day tournament that ended 14 January saw the Royal Selangor Yacht Club sailing team emerge as champion.
