Kuala Nerus – There were no words that could describe the feelings of a husband and a wife who came from Gua Musang, Kelantan, when accepting their late son’s degree at the 21st Universiti Malaysia Terengganu Convocation Ceremony at the Sultan Mizan Hall.

Their son, Allahyarham Mohamad Amir Nordin, 23, passed away after being involved in a road accident last year when he was delivering a customer’s order in Gua Musang.

Mohamad Amir was a final-year student at the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Social Development under the Bachelor of Management (Marketing) programme and was scheduled to get onstage together with the other batchmates during the convocation ceremony that ran for three days beginning 22 October.

His death was relayed to his parents by his older brother who also works as a food delivery rider and happened to be at the scene of the accident.

“He was a good son and never disobeyed us. He would do what was asked of him and would not do things we disapproved of,” said Nordin Mohammad, 58, when met after the accepting his son’s degree.

“He did not show any sudden changes before the accident, but on the day itself, he never looked back towards the house, as he had always done, when he was leaving to deliver customers’ food orders. Maybe that was a sign he would not return forever.

The late son worked very hard to find a side income, said his mother Nor Aini Awang, 55.

“We can be considered poor, and my husband only works at a sawmill. He was the fifth from six siblings. His older brothers had to cancel their intention of furthering the studies at universities because they want to help us and let their younger siblings continue their studies.”

“Every semester holiday, he would take on odd jobs, such as being a waiter, selling second-hand clothes, and helping out at food stalls. He was our hope, being one of the only two children who had the chance to study at university, but Allah loves him more.”

“UMT has always been in contact with us and has helped settle our son’s academic matter including agreeing to consider his study as completed and conferring this degree.

“We braved ourselves to be present here because this degree is the last memento of our son and it is something that makes us happy,” she said.
