KUALA NERUS – More than 1000 students from foundation centres and matriculation colleges throughout the country are participating in 2019 Inter-University (Foundation Centre) Sports Tournament from 23-26 January, hosted for the first time by STEM Foundation Centre of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT).

The tournament, which symbolizes the collaborative effort of foundation centres and matriculation colleges throughout the country, is held with the aims to encourage students to be excellent not only in academic area but also in extra-curricular components, as well as to become a platform for discovering those with talents in sports.

According to UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Professor Ts Dr Che Mohd Ruzaidi Ghazali, who spoke on behalf of UMT Vice Chancellor, the tournament would help improve the relationship among the universities.

“In addition to serving as a reminder for students to lead a healthy lifestyle, the tournament will also help improve the relationship that has been established among the public universities in the country.

The tournament sees a total of ten sports being staged including soccer, chess, lawn bowl, futsal, and archery.

The opening ceremony was held at UMT Sultan Mizan Hall and officiated by Professor Dr Mohd Cairul Iqbal Mohd Amin, Deputy Director General of Malaysian Higher Education.

Meanwhile, UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar welcomed all the contingents and hoped that the tournament would proceed smoothly and healthy competition be maintained.
