UMT ACKNOWLEDGES ITS GRADUANDS DURING PHYSICAL CONVOCATION CEREMONY

Kuala Nerus, 6 December- Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) today acknowledged its 2878 graduands during the 18th Convocation Ceremony (2nd Series), which proceeded in a lively fashion despite the new norms. The event was physically held, and the university complied to the standard operating procedure (SOP) set by the National Security Council.

The convocation ceremony will continue until 13 December, and it will consist of seven sessions, which will be held only in the morning to allow sanitation works to be carried out in the evening.  

UMT Pro Chancellor Tan Sri Samsudin Osman congratulated the graduands on the successful completion of their academic journey amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Congratulations as well to UMT management for its constant commitment in ensuring the quality and effectiveness of academic and national education system, especially during the present situation.

 “I hope that the UMT community will join hands to further improve UMT’s image and reputation as well as its teaching and research, thereby enabling UMT to continue its contributions towards the society and the country.

Meanwhile, UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mazlan Abd Ghaffar in his speech said that threats of the COVID-19 have altered the norms the people were accustomed to, including those concerning the national education system.

He added that the pandemic may be considered a blessing in disguise as it has forced people to leave their comfort zones and adapt to the current situation especially involving digitalisation for continued survival.

“Graduates must be ready to face the reality of the ever-challenging working world and be able to adapt to the current situation by equipping themselves with new skills needed by employers.

“In addition, they must be willing to venture into the world of businesses that promise unlimited income,” he said.

Professor Mazlan also said that UMT is ever ready to fulfil the students’ needs. Various efforts have been implemented to ensure that intellectual and physical resources at UMT are pulled to help the students.

“Praise Be to God, this year, special financial aid for students amounting to RM550,000 has been disbursed in the forms of laptop aids, volunteer allowances, student accommodation subsidy, swab test kit subsidy, and others. This aid should be able to ease some of the burden faced by the students and subsequently help them to have a better focus on their study”.

Also conferred degrees during the convocation ceremony were the first batch of the Information Technology and Computer Science Master’s Programmes. Seven of the graduates are colleagues at UMT’s Digital Ecosystem Centre. Wan Mohd. Wazir Wan Abdul Wahab, 43; Ahmad Nazir Haron, 43; and Abdul Rahim Abu Bakar, 39, were conferred master’s degree in Information Technology, while Tajul Arifin Abd. Manan, 45; Mohamad Jazli Shafizan Jaafar, 44; Nordin Abd. Rasid, 38; and Mohd. Erman Safawie Che Ibrahim, 32 were conferred master’s degree in Computer Science.

Of the 2878 graduands, 52 were conferred Doctor of Philosophy degree, 152 master’s degree, 2559 bachelor’s degree, and 115 diploma.

The firs series of the 18th Convocation held on 27 Mac, 2021, in a hybrid manner awarded Honorary Degree of Doctor of Technology to First Admiral Dato ‘ Ir. Dr. Haji Ahmad Murad bin Haji Omar (Retired), and Professor Emeritus status to Prof. Ir Dr Ahmad Jusoh.  

Also in attendance were Tan Sri Samsudin Osman, UMT Pro-Chancellor, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas, Chairman of UMT Board of Directors, members of UMT Board of Directors, Deputy Vice Chancellors, and principal officers.
