Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has exercised a small-scale restructuring as part of the effort to further strengthen the identity and achievement of the university. With the recent move, a faculty has been renamed and another newly set up, and two new departments has been strategically created. The aim is to align the organizational structure with the current and future needs of higher education in Malaysia.

Faculty Restructuring

One of the main changes UMT has made in conjunction with the new year 2024 was to rename a few faculties and set up a new one to better reflect the expertise at the university.

The Faculty of Ocean Engineering Technology and Informatics has been renamed Faculty of Ocean Engineering. At the same time, a new faculty has been set up, which was previously part of the Faculty of Ocean Engineering Technology and Informatics. The new faculty is named Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics. The changes were considered necessary to allow each faculty to focus on its niche areas. The effort is in line with UMT’s philosophy of contributing to the development and science and technology in the country.

New Assignments

In addition to faculty restructuring, UMT has also made changes to its organizational structure. These changes involved the addition of new divisions, created to further strengthen the administrative functions and roles.

The two newly set up departments are UMT Life Centre and Sustainable Management Centre, headed by Prof. Dr. Hafiza Aishah Hashim and Assoc. Prof. ChM. Dr. Chia Poh Wei as directors respectively.

Meanwhile, Ts. Wan Abdul Manan Wan Abdullah has been appointed as the new Registrar effective 1 January 2024. He succeeded the former Registrar Zukiferee Ibrahim, who is now trusted with a new responsibility as Director of Corporate Communications Office.

There has also been a change within the Digital Ecosystem Centre, where Assoc. Prof. Dr. Engku Fadzli Hasan Syed Abdullah took over the post of Director, replacing Prof. Ts. Dr. Muhammad Suzuri Hitam.

The transformations carried out by UMT took into account the increased capacity in research and innovation as well as support services for the development of a balanced university ecosystem, in line with the main thrusts stated in UMT’s Strategic Plan.
