Ramadan is not only about fasting from sunrise to sunset, but it is also a time for Muslims to increase their spiritual awareness, empathy, and gratefulness to Allah SWT. But unfortunately, as we prepare food for breaking our fast, we forget these values and become entangled in wastage of food, energy, and resources during this holy month.

Food wastage is a serious issue that needs to be effectively handled, especially in the context of Ramadan, where we may be tempted to buy more than we need. Therefore, it is important for Muslims to practice several initiatives that can control wastage during Ramadan.

Before spending money to buy food, it is important to first list down the actual amount of food needed. It is better to avoid buying food impulsively and excessively that it can no longer be consumed and subsequently end up in the garbage bin. This scenario is a norm throughout Ramadan, and this not only burdens the cleaners but also negatively affects the environment.

If too much food has been bought, the best way is to serve all during the breaking of the fast but only a portion of it. The remaining food can be kept in the refrigerator and eaten later after reheating during sahur or other times. This way, we can reduced food wastage and also save money.

In addition to food wastage, we need to also avoid energy and water wastage during Ramadan. This is the best time to reduce our time with gadjet and use it to read Quran and perform other religious activities. Indirectly this action reduces electricity use and contributes to environment sustainability.

Often times we are not able to control ourselves when visiting food bazaar that sells all kinds of food and end up buying more than needed. If this happens, we can practice the concept of sharing by distributing some of the food to our neighbours, friends, or the needy groups. This not only earns rewards from Allah but also improve our relationships with one another.

Ramadan is a time to reflect and improve oneself inside out. By taking the initiative to avoid wastage, we not only keep the environment clean but also practice true religious values. Make this Ramadan more meaningful by improving oneself, being good to others, and protecting the environment.
