KUALA NERUS—Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). His three-year term commenced 21 May 2020.

Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Shamsul was appointed by the Minister of Higher Education in replacement of Tan Sri Halim Mohamad.

He was on a three-day visit to UMT, his first since holding the post. He also held a brief discussion with the university’s top management while here.  

Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Shamsul was taken on visits to the Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS) Gallery, Pulau Bidong Nature Research Station, and several other UMT research centres.

Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Shamsul currently holds important posts in several companies in the corporate sector, including MMC Corporation Berhad, Enra Group Berhad, and NCB Holdings Bhd.

UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar meanwhile welcomed Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Shamsul to campus and offered her congratulations on the appointment. She expressed her hope of seeing UMT achieving further excellence under his leadership.

“A warm welcome Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas. Indeed, he is a corporate figure with proven excellence in the fields of management and strategies. We are eager for the changes he will bring to UMT, in his capacity as the chairman, that will put the university at par with world renowned universities,” Prof. Nor Aieni said.
