Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has deployed a flood squad comprising 200 volunteers to Pahang to help the flood victims in the state.

The volunteers, who are UMT staff and students, have been sent to distribute food and lend helping hands to the flood victims.

UMT Flood Relief Mission coordinator Abdullah Syukri M. Salleh said that the first phase of the mission has been focused on UMT students’ homes that have been affected by the flood in Pahang.

“Praise Be to God, UMT was able to successfully form a team of volunteers in less than 24 hours after the announcement was made.

“A total of 130 volunteers made up of staff and students have helped clean UMT students’ homes at Taman Inderapura, Taman Indera Sempurna, Kampung Bukit Rangin, and Kampung Melayu Sungai Lembing.

“We managed to clean 20 houses on the first day and distribute food baskets to the victims to ease their burden,” he said.

Abdullah Syukri added that the second phase will target 60 more houses and public amenities such as the community halls and mosques.

“The second phase will involve 77 volunteers, who will help clean the houses and the public places.

“We will increase the number of food baskets from 20 to 700, and these baskets will be prepared using the allocated fund totalling RM22,400, which is being managed by UMT’s Sultan Mahmud Islamic Centre,” he said.

Meanwhile, UMT has announced the cancellation of all teaching and learning activities for seven days beginning 19 December.
