Kuala Nerus – The technology for industrial water treatment will undergo a vast improvement in the near future, and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT)’s researchers are the ones responsible for making it happen.

This becomes possible when UMT signed a memorandum of understanding with Venator Asia Sdn Bhd to collaborate with each other.

The collaboration between the two parties signifies the importance of university-industry relationships especially in the aspect of research and development, said Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri Ibrahim, UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International).

“Both the MOU and the MOA were simultaneously signed during the event,” he said. “These two will focus on collaborations in the field of environmental technology, with attention on wastewater treatment through research and sharing of expertise from both parties.”

Prof. Zamri said that UMT and Venator Asia have benefitted from the close relationship that started five years ago.

“The relationship started in 2018 when Venator Asia agreed to have the lecturers and students from UMT’s Faculty of Ocean Engineering Technology and Informatics (FTKKI) undergo industrial attachment at the company,” he said. “The company subsequently channelled three industrial grants and three consultative projects to FTKKI researchers.”

UMT has appointed Venator Asia Managing Director Dato’ Haji Rozano Saad as an Adjunct Professor at FTKKI.

“With the appointment, UMT students will be able to gain added value through expertise sharing sessions, such as Industry in the Classroom,” he said.

Prior to the signing ceremony, UMT had received a fund totalling RM200,000 for a research project that will be carried out by a team of UMT researchers.

The document signing was completed by Prof. Zamri on behalf of UMT and Dato’ Haji Rozano on behalf of Venator Asia.

Also in attendance were Venator Asia Production Manager Suhaimi Mohd Aripin, UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Prof. ChM. Dr. Marinah Mohd Ariffin, FTKKI Dean Prof. Ts. Dr. Che Mohd Ruzaidi Ghazali, FTKKI Deputy Dean (Academic and Student Affairs) Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Salisa Abdul Rahman, and UMT principal officers.
