PROJECT ON MICROPLASTIC IN AIR CHOSEN AS SRD2020 WINNER

Research project entitled Airborne Microplastic conducted by Naresh Kumar Chenappan was announced the overall winner during Student Research Day 2020.

The student of Bachelor of Science (Analytical and Environmental Chemistry) took home RM500 cash prizes, a trophy, and a certificate.

The research project was conducted under the supervision of Dr Noorlin Muhamad and Dr Tuan Nurul Sabiqah Tuan Anuar.

“I never expected that the project Airborne Microplastic would be recognized at this level. This has been my biggest success so far, and I am so happy. Thank you very much to all involved and to those who have supported me in my research, especially the supervisors, laboratory staff, Microplastic Research Interest Group, and friends,” Naresh said.

He said that the study proved there is microplastic pollution in the air that can affect human respiratory system and contribute towards chronic diseases.

He also said that the study was the first of its kind.

“All this while, most researchers have been focusing on microplastic in water especially in the ocean and how it can affect the ecosystem. I decided to conduct a study on microplastic in the air after a serious consideration, in addition to receiving full support from my two supervisors,” Naresh said.

Student Research Day 2020 that took place at Sultan Mizan Hall, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, showcased 1,935 abstracts from students of five faculties. A total of 117 awards were presented.

UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar congratulated the students who had showcased their best research outcomes.

“I hope that SRD2020 will become a medium for improving our lives, discovering new knowledge, introducing various innovations especially in UMT niche areas. Indirectly, this will help UMT in its effort to establish its name,” she said.
