KUALA NERUS, 6th October 2018 – Some 350 participants and over 50 volunteers expressed their support to breast cancer patients by joining the walkathon programme organised by the Samo Terengganu Breast Cancer Support Club (SAMO).

The walkathon covered a distance of five kilometers, spanning most parts of the UMT campus.

According to Associate Professor Dr Noraznawati Ismail, a UMT lecturer cum programme director, the walkathon served as a an information sharing platform to help the club meet its vision of spreading information about breast cancer.

“It is important to create public awareness on breast cancer and provide information on early prevention measures. In addition, this event was held to gather the people in the community in one place so they could all together voice their support to breast cancer patients.”

“Praise Be to God, this time the event was well-received compared to the one last year. This showed that our effort in spreading the message gained positive reactions.”

For the record, the Samo Terengganu Breast Cancer Support Club was formed in 2013 with the vision of increasing the awareness on breast cancer and giving support to breast cancer patients and former cancer patients.

“Every participant who paid the fee to join the event was considered a donor because we used part of the payment to help cancer patients receive treatment and obtain needed equipment such as oxygen concentrator.”

“We also welcome organizations, corporate bodies, individuals and willing others to join us in helping the breast cancer patients. You may get in touch directly with us, and together we will help these patients.”

Dr Noraznawati further said that all kinds of interesting activities were planned to attract every age level of the community to join the walkathon.

“Other than the walkathon, we also organized other activities, such as free health checkup, SAMO exhibition, relaxation therapy demo and a few others.”

UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar in her speech said that she gave full support towards efforts to educate people on breast cancer such as this event.

“Congratulations to SAMO Terengganu, a non-profit organization for breast cancer patients and former breast cancer patients, for having successfully organized this programme. With many participations from the public, university students, and SAMO members, the programme has met its objective, which was to show support to breast cancer patients and encourage them to live their lives to the fullest despite the illness,” she said further.
