It is a norm during Ramadan that the practice of giving charity becomes more active. The amount of donation at the mosques or even other places surely increases. What is more, donation can now be performed online without having to go the mosque to put money into the donation box. This shows that the Muslim society is thrilled to engage in an act of charity during Ramadan as the reward for doing so is multiplied and the sins may be removed.

Rasulullah s.a.w bersabda said:” The most important charity is charity during the month of Ramadan”. (Riwayat At-Tirmidzi).

Breaking fast at the mosque

Also popular is the practice of sponsoring fast-breaking meal, so much so that sponsorship for each day is filled quickly as soon as it is advertised. Sultan Mahmud Islamic Centre (PISM), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), also hosts fast breaking for the students every year. According to Ustazah Faizah Ismail, PISM Deputy Director, every year the centre allocates RM7,000 for the preparation of food for fast breaking for 500 to 1000 students daily. She added this year PISM will continue to tradition of preparing fast-breaking meal during Ramadan for the students.

The money for the fast-breaking meal comes from the donation by UMT staff, whether through salary deduction to Ramadan Fund, personal contirbution, or collective contribution by centres of responsibility.

The concept of sharing of food in a tray among four to five people is also maintained during fast-breaking at PISM. Faizah said the concept is to relive the practice by Rasulullah SAW that has been abandoned although a big reward is promised for doing so.

Allah SWT also shuts the gates to hell, chains the devil, and open the gates to heaven widely. In addition, all religious activities are promised rewards of a thousand-fold.

Let’s double the prayers and charity giving during this holy month.

Ramadan Nursery

To enable the parents to perform tarawih prayers at UMT mosque, PISM also provides nursery for children 2 to 5 years old. The nursery is open to UMT staff and the local community who perform tarawih at PISM.

Various interesting activities are provided by PISM for the children in addition to the toys. The children are looked after by asnaf student volunteers who receive zakat allocated by PISM.

The public is welcome to contribute to Ramadan Fund, UMT, and help make the programmes at UMT mosque run smoothly.

A hadith from Abu Hurairah Radhiallahu Anhu narrated that Rasulullah SAW said: “Indeed a hand that gives is better than the hand that receives.” (Riwayat al-Bukhari).
