KUALA NERUS—Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) acknowledged 268 of its staff comprising all levels from top management to supporting group who have worked hard to steer UMT towards excellence.

The award recipients were recognized during UMT Annual Awards (MAT’19), which is held every year as the formal occasion for presenting several awards including long-term awards, retiree awards, excellent staff awards, Vice Chancellor awards and special talent awards. 

UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar in her speech said that the awards were meant to motivate the recipients to continue being excellent so as to create high impact work culture that would improve the quality of the university.

“To ensure the survival of UMT, we need to improve its visibility in the niche area of marine science and aquatic resources at the national and global level, and one way to achieve this is by increasing the number of excellent and quality staff,” Professor Nor Aieni said.

“In addition, I hope that all UMT staff will continue to suggest new ideas and innovations for the good of the university. Innovations do not have to come in the form of products but can be in the form of university management system that can lessen bureaucracy and increase the service delivery system,” she said.

One of the event highlights was UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Professor Dr Mazlan Abd. Ghaffar receiving the Academic Leadership Award for his academic contribution at the university and also national levels. Some of his contributions include being advisor to the ASEAN Fisheries Network, distinguished member of the Coral Triangle Initiative, and visiting professor at universities in Japan and other countries.

Also present at the event were Tan Sri Halim Mohamad, Chairman of the UMT Board of Directors, other members of UMT Board of Directors, and principal officers of UMT.
