UMT lends support to women empowerment efforts

Various agencies in the country have taken the initiatives to empower the women through the organizing of entrepreneurship programmes.

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is one of the agencies that has been committed to helping the women become successful in entrepreneurship, especially the community in Terengganu.

UMT has conducted various entrepreneurship programmes and initiatives in the forms of knowledge transfer programmes, translational projects, community services, and research.

In support of the government’s effort, UMT has recently organized the Empowering Women in Entrepreneurship programme in collaboration with several agencies including industry players.

According to UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar, the programme is conducted in support of the aim of the National Entrepreneurship Policy and to help empower women entrepreneurs in Terengganu so as to make them more competitive, viable, and global minded.

“As a university for society, UMT is committed to helping in the development of women entrepreneur community especially in Terengganu,” he said.

“In establishing an entrepreneurship ecosystem that holistic, conducive, and inclusive, UMT experts and students have been actively participating in entrepreneurship programmes involving communities in and outside of UMT.”

More than 500 people attended the programme, which was officiated by Haji Wan Hapandi Wan Nik, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Entrepreneurship, Human Resource, Micro-industry, and Consumer Affairs.

Professor Mazlan said that UMT has received a fund totalling RM2.25 million to conduct the entrepreneurship project at the community level.

“ECERDC has trusted UMT to organize the programme called “Empower ECER: Terengganu Micro Entrepreneurs 2022” to support the socioeconomic development agenda of Terengganu,” he said.

There were many events held during the programme, such as briefing by financing agencies regarding entrepreneurship opportunities and initiatives, sale of products by local entrepreneurs, a forum titled “Empowering Women in Entrepreneurship, and an entrepreneurship clinic.

“It is my hope that the programme will help improve the income and quality of life of the local community, in line with the aspiration of the state government,” Professor Mazlan said.

Also taking place was the presentation of certificates of completion to participants of seven high-impact knowledge transfer projects conducted by UMT academics.
