Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has always been known as an institution that cares about the welfare of its campus community, especially the needy students.

The Office of the Bursar, UMT, is aware that the financial aid received by some students is not enough to go around, what with having to pay for the fees and buy course-related items, in addition to having to spend money on basic necessities.

To ease the burden of the needy students, the Office of the Bursar has taken the initiative to launch the Happy Box programme as part of its University Social Responsbility (USR) commitment.

UMT Bursar Zahara Kedri said that the programme was initiated after witnessing the financial struggles of those in the low-income category, more commonly known as B40.

“I thought of this idea, discussed with my 80 staff, and they all agreed. The Happy Box programme is made possible by the voluntary monthly financial contribution from the staff in this office. Happy Boxes are distributed to the students who fall under qualified categories,” she said.

“In addition to cultivating the spirit of sharing, the Happy Box programme is also hoped to foster closer relationship among the staff,” she said.

Zahara said that, throughout 2018, a total of 10 Happy Box give-away series were organised, where the Happy Boxes were distributed to 1246 selected students, with each box containing food pack and basic necessities, involving a cost of over RM10000.

“The positive feedback received especially from the students has compelled the management team of the Office of the Bursar to continue with the programme in the coming years,’ she said.
