Kuala Nerus – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Izani Mohd Zain has been appointed the new Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni). His appointment took effect from 19 February 2023. Dr. Izani replaced Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hafiz Zakariya, whose appointment ended 30 November 2022.

Dr. Mohd Izani was born in Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan. He has an expertise in politics, particularly regarding government formation as well as democracy and Islamic politics.

The experience he gained in the field of journalism and writing while working at the biggest publishing, printing, and printed material distribution company in Shah Alam made him a good prospect who had the potential to progress, and this subsequently drew the attention of the then Minister of Higher Education Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who made Dr. Izani his Press Secretary from 2009 to 2013.

Dr. Izani used to hold the post of chief coordinator at Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), and he was a member of the task force for drafting the Masterplan for Johor to be Recognized as Malay Global Civilization.

As an academic, Dr. Mohd Izani is active in article publication, having written articles such as “Islam and Democracy: The Challenges of Contemporary Muslim Politics in Malaysia,” “Democracy and the Islamic World: A Theoretical and Practical Perspective,” “Democracy and Sustainability of Muslim Politics,” “Transforming the Leadership of Higher Education Institutions (IPT) in Malaysia,” and “Accelerating Transformation and Prosperous Malaysia”. He also served as editor of books on speeches by Johor Menteri Besar.

UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said the appointment will further improve the quality and excellence of student management at UMT, in line with his aspiration of producing excellent graduates. Prof. Mazlan conveyed his hope during the 2023 UMT Vice Chancellor’s Mandate, held at UMT campus recently.

“I believe that the new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) will use his wide experiences to help improve the employability of UMT graduates and also mould them to be job creators. Therefore, the improved 2023 initiatives include establishing the entrepreneurship ecosystem that supports MOHE Entrepreneurship Action Plan 2021 – 2025,” he said.
