Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is making great strides in its quest to become a fully sustainable campus, in line with the goal included in UMT’s Strategic Plan.

In the 2021 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, UMT has managed to jump 134 spots higher than the previous achievement, and the university renowned for its research on marine science has been ranked at 204.

UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said that the achievement is an indication of the success of improvement efforts by UMT.

“Although considered younger than other public universities that have been in existence for many years, UMT has employees with a big heart.

“The achievement is also a result of collective efforts and aspirations from all faculties and centres at UMT that always aim to make UMT a fully sustainable campus.

Professor Mazlan added that UMT’s place in the latest rankings proves that the university has gained recognition on a continuous basis throughout its five years of participation in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.

He said that several initiatives involving infrastructure and research will be introduced, such as wastewater management system.

In addition, Professor Mazlan hopes that the establishment of the Climate Change Adaptation Laboratory at UMT will help the university to maintain its position among the best universities in future rankings.

More than 956 institutions committed in environmental conservation efforts participated in the 2021 rankings.
