More than 30 turtles have been recorded dead in Terengganu in a span of less than six months in 2022. The number has caused researchers to become more concerned.

The increased number of sick and injured turtles washed ashore in the country is very much correlated with the state of the ocean’s health. One of the main factors contributing to ocean pollution is the failure of waste management system on land.

According to experts, the quantity of collected rubbish has been on the increase for the past few years, and in 2022 the amount of rubbish collected was about 14 million tons. If not properly managed, the rubbish will flow into the sea and become food to some marine animals such as turtles.

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), a university actively championing environmental sustainability, has organized another Beach Clean Up programme in conjunction with the recent Aidil Fitri celebration.

Taking part in the event were 50 volunteers comprising students and local communities. Also participating was an NGO Trash Hero. Volunteers carried out their tasks in their Raya costumes, in keeping with the programme’s theme.

The unique idea was meant to further promote the environmental conservation campaign among the society. The public was educated on the importance of conserving the environment and the effect of pollution on the environmental ecosystem, which when disrupted will jeopardize the human lives.

In less than two hours, the Beach Clean Up Raya Edition managed to collect 185 kg of rubbish.

Although the event has been organized yearly, the amount of rubbish drifting into the sea has not decreased. More properly planned awareness campaigns are needed at every segment of the society in order to sustain the environmental ecosystem and ensure the wellbeing of the people.
