UMT sailing team has proven it can compete with the best by coming in fourth at the 17th Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2019 held 7 – 12 January.

The UMT team comprising students and staff of UMT was the lone participant from Malaysian public institutions of higher learning.

UMT team has participated in several sailing competitions at various levels, said Izhar Mustaat, UMT team manager.

“We’re very grateful that the UMT team managed to secure 4th placing for the Sportsboat class,” he said.

UMT was one of the 19 teams from Malaysia that competed with strong teams from 7 countries including Australia, USA,UK, Russia, Singapore, Japan and Thailand.

He added that the UMT sailing team has been making a name for itself in sailing competitions at the national and international levels since 2015.

“Participation in sailing races not only improves the skills of the team members but also bolsters the reputation of UMT as the first learning institution in Malaysia to involved in the sport of sailing,” Izhar said.

He also said that these competitions can offer job opportunities to  students with a coaching certificate in sailing from the  National Sports Institute of Malaysia to train newcomers as well as provide exposure to marina operations and management that have been handled by foreign workers.

“We will conduct training and make preparation to secure better placing in the coming 18th Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2020,” he said.
