KUALA NERUS—Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) in collaboration with industry partner Salihin Chartered Accountants gave a special acknowledgement to 127 students of the Bachelor of Accounting programme during the UMT-SALIHIN TAF Student Appreciation Ceremony.

The Teaching Accounting Firm that was set up in 2016 was the first of its kind in Malaysia that provided learning environment in real-life industry setting for accounting students starting from their second year of study.

All students were given the same opportunity  to go for attachment at TAF when taking five courses related to auditing, accounting, and taxation that encompassed the important elements in the accounting world.

According to UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar, to date, TAF that first started the training with only  seven students in the first cohort had successfully trained five cohorts including one from this semester, totalling 310 students taking the five courses.

“A total of 127 students from cohort 3 and 4 were given a special acknowledgement, and five among them were selected as best students,” she said.

“On behalf of UMT, I would like to thank Dr Salihin Abang for sponsoring the best student awards. Without the cooperation and the high commitment from Salihin Chartered Accountants, TAF wouldn’t have achieved the intended objectives,” the Vice Chancellor said.

The programme combining theoretical and practical knowledge of accounting brought out the best in UMT students that they were recruited by established companies such as KPMG, HP, and even SALIHIN itself, the Vice Chancellor said.

“My hope is that the strategic alliance between UMT and SALIHIN can be maintained and strengthened to produce greater number of holistic graduates who can meet industry needs especially as we approach Industrial Revolution 4.0.

I hope that the collaboration that has gone on for  two years can be continued for the benefit of UMT and SALIHIN,” said Professor Nor Aieni.

In line with UMT mission “Generating knowledge for society’s well-being and environmental sustainability”, it was hoped that the programme would involve the surrounding communities as well in the future.

The event was held at Auditorium Mahyuddin, UMT, on 28 November.
