UMT, WorldFish sign MOU to ensure sufficient food supply

Kuala Nerus, 24 Mei 2022 – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has widened its fisheries network at the international level when it sealed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreement with Worldfish today.

The MOU agreement was signed with the aim of further developing and strengthening fisheries and aquaculture research in Malaysia.

“The scope of the MOU includes research activities and publication, staff and student attachment and mobility programmes, supervision, conferences, and special short-term and long-term research programmes,” said Prof. Ts. Dr. Zamri Ibrahim, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and International. Prof. Zamri was present on behalf of UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar.

“This partnership will help support the Zero Hunger mission and 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, through the use of science and innovation to transform food, land, water, and aquatic food for a more sustainable life,” he said.

Earlier, UMT received an international grant totalling RM165,000 to conduct research in collaboration with Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU).

UMT is a Malaysian public university renowned for its research in marine science and aquatic resources. The university has received various notable recognitions at the national and international levels.

One of the aims of its establishment is to improve research in fisheries and aquaculture field. The university is host to researchers with relevant expertise who have been constantly consulted by government bodies and private agencies. These researchers have also been approached by media practitioners for information on related matters.

The strategic relationship between UMT and Worldfish has existed since 2017.
