KUALA NERUS 3rd Sept – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) welcomed 2,451 new students for the 2018/2019 intake today. The increase in the number of students choosing UMT showed that the university was able to attract school leavers to come and be a part of its community.

These students would be taking one of the 27 undergraduate academic programmes offered, to equip themselves with required knowledge and skills before entering the job market.

UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International) Professor Ir Noor Azuan Osman said that, of the total number, 65 percent opted for science stream and the remaining social science stream.

For this year’s student intake, 2,893 offer letters were generated, compared to only 2,782 for 2017/2018 session, representing a 3.8% increase.

UMT also made offers to 14 students with disability of different types, namely vision impairment, physical disability, hearing impairment, learning disability, and speech impairment, and welcomed a pair of twins, one of whom was disabled.

According to UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Professor Dr Che Mohd Ruzaidi Ghazali, of the students who registered, 76 percent was female, and 24 percent male.

One of the unique moves by UMT during the registration was introducing Caravanserai@UMT Mosque for less fortunate parents who came to send their sons and daughters here, as part of humanitarian initiative.

Managed by UMT Islamic Centre, Caravanserai@UMT Mosque offered free sleeping accomodation, resting area, breakfast, and car inspection especially to parents who travelled from afar.
