Ramadhan is considered as one of the holiest Islamic months, and the time for its celebration this year has just come. It is a special month, one that brings blessing to all Muslims everywhere.

It is a month whose arrival is eagerly awaited. Several historical events occurred in this month, and one of them was the Muslim soldiers’ victory in the Badar al-Kubra battle on 17 Ramadan, which allowed them to enter the city of Mecca, also known at the time as Fath al-Fakkah.

Like the one last year, this year’s Ramadan is celebrated differently than the years before. This is all thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has hit the world, Malaysia included, two years ago and till today has not subsided.

The pandemic means that standard operating procedure must be fully observed when going about daily activities during this fasting month to limit the spread of the virus. The pandemic has compelled people to live life in a new norm, which makes it a little more challenging the communities to keep in touch with each other, more so during this holy month, the best time for giving and asking for forgiveness.

However, this year’s Ramadan is celebrated in a better atmosphere compared to the one last year, where the rules were stricter. Ramadan bazaars were not allowed due to increasing cases of the COVID-19 infection at the time. The bazaars are allowed again this year, though subject from time to time to latest decisions by the National Security Council and the Ministry of Health.

What is more exciting is that for the very first time Ramadan bazaars are held on Terengganu Draw Bridge. Visitors get to enjoy new experience of shopping for food and maybe breaking their fast there while enjoying the scenic views around the iconic structure.

The reopening of Ramadan bazaars is a boon to many. Sellers whose livelihoods were badly affected before are now able to increase their incomes by participating in the bazaars.

Also, unlike last year, mosques everywhere are filled with people, young and old, who come to perform the terawih prayers.

May this Ramadan celebrated amid the pandemic increase all Muslims’ love for their creator. Let us multiply our ibadah during this fasting month while we still have the opportunity.
