Kuala Nerus – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has created a new history when it became the first among all public universities in the country to set up an on-campus diving school.

His Royal Highness Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, Sultan of Terengganu, on Monday deigned to officiate the diving school at UMT’s Marine Natural Research Station on Bidong Island.

Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said His Royal Highness’ willingness to visit the station meant so much to UMT and in a way reflected the Sultan’s support towards efforts the university has been making.

Per Professor Mazlan, the establishment of the diving school is in line with UMT’s niche area, and the school will play an important role in supporting the teaching and learning process.

“It has also made UMT the only university in the country to own a dive centre, operating at the main campus and the research station,” Professor Mazlan said.

He added that the centre provides services including professional diver service and equipment rental for all scuba diving activities be they research, teaching and learning, or recreational activities.

“I hope the establishment of the centre will benefit students, researchers, and outside agencies,” Professor Mazlan said.

Earlier, the state government awarded UMT with a temporary occupation license (TOL), valid for 99 years, that allows the university to occupy Bidong Island to conduct research activities.

With the various efforts UMT has made, the university has managed to gain several recognitions, such as being ranked in Times Higher Education (World University Rankings), Times Higher Education (Impact Rankings), Times Higher Education (World University Rankings by Subject), QS World University Rankings, QS University Rankings (Asia), UI GreenMetric, Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA) and SETARA.
