MOHE’S SPECIAL PROGRAMME HELPS STUDENTS IN NEED

Kuala Nerus, 3 October 2021- Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini Ahmad was at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) today for one of the Ministry of Higher Education’s (MOHE) programmes.

Datuk Seri Noraini came to participate in Sentuhan Kasih Mahasiswa@KPT Prihatin (Touch of Love to University Students@MOHE Cares) Walkabout Programme involving seven selected undergraduate students from around Kuala Terengganu.

According to Datuk Seri Noraini, the programme is implemented to improve students’ welfare and cultivate volunteering spirit among universities’ and ministry’s staff. The programme receives cooperation from PTPTN and public universities, including UKM, UTHM, UTM, UiTM, UPNM, UPM, UniSZA, and UMT.  

Datuk Seri Noraini added that 22 students have been visited and presented with offer letters for 2021/2022 intake, advanced money from PTPTN, SSPN account, and scholarship that includes allowance, tuition fees, hostel fees, and airline fees.

Three of the visited students were UMT students. Jesline Mohd Sabri Lee, first year undergraduate from the bachelor’s degree programme in nanophysics, said she felt honoured to receive a visit from the minister and be made her foster daughter.

Jeslina said that her father works as a lorry driver in Kuala Lumpur earning RM950 monthly, while her mother works as a salesgirl with a monthly income of RM1200.

Her parents had been separated when she was eight, and she has depended on financial aids since her primary school due to financial difficulty.

“I believe I will be able to improve my family’s lives one day,” she said. “So, I always try to do my best in academics and involve myself in various programmes.”

Jeslina also received a laptop computer, RM1000 pocket money, data plan worth RM120+RM200 (MOHE voucher), RM300 Dermasiswa Zakat, and groceries worth RM150.

Two other UMT undergraduates also received similar contributions, and they were Abdul Hakim Yahya from the biodiversity conservation and management programme and Nur Ain Farhana Mohd Ariffin from the biological science programme.

Accompanying Datuk Seri Noraini were Prof. Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar, UMT Vice Chancellor; Prof. Dr. Fadzli Adam, UniSZA Acting Vice Chancellor; Datuk Seri Dr. Mazlan Yusoff, MOHE Secretary General; Dato’ Profesor Dr. Husaini Omar, Higher Education Director General; and Ts. Zainab Ahmad, Director General, Polytechnics and Community College Education Department.

Prior to the walkabout programme, Datuk Seri Noraini was at UMT to visit the Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS), the first institute at UMT to be recognized as HICoE since 2012. She also visited AKUATROP Hatchery and signed her name on the plaque congratulating AKUATROP for HICoE recognition in the field of Future Food: Sustainable Shellfish Aquaculture.

She also launched three books, “Universiti Malaysia Terengganu Prihatin: Mengharungi Cabaran Pandemik COVID-19 (18 Mac – 31 Mei 2020)”, “Perjuangan yang Belum Selesai: Bahagian Hal Ehwal Pelajar UMT Mendepani Cabaran COVID-19”, and “Strengthening Government-University-Industry and Community Collaboration”.

Datuk Seri Noraini also witnessed the exchange of MoU documents at INOS Auditorium between UMT and Sina Resources Sdn Bhd for commercialisation of Mannheimia Haemolytica Intranasal Spray Vaccine (KustemVax).

KUSTEMVax is a product created from research by Prof. Dr. Mohd Effendy Abd. Wahid from the Faculty of Fisheries and Food Science.

According to Prof. Dr. Mazlan, the product has been registered as an intellectual property under the Patent category at MyIPO.

He also said that, through the collaboration, UMT will license the rights to KUSTEMVax to SRSB with fees and duration to be determined at a later time.
